The termination (ending) of a pregnancy.
An intentional or induced abortion is
performed to prevent the birth of a live
child. An involuntary abortion is called
a miscarriage.

ABSTAIN ABSTINENCE

The avoidance of certain substances or
activities.  Frequently used to refer to
the avoidance of certain foods, drugs,
or sexual activities. Abstinence (from
intercourse) is a form of birth control.

ADOLESCENCE

The period between the beginning of
puberty and adulthood. Almost synonomous
with the teenage years.  This is a
period characterized by rapid
developmental changes.

ADULTERY

Sexual intercourse between partners of
whom at least one is married to another
person.  Also called extramarital sex.

AFTERBIRTH

The placental material that is
discharged during the delivery of a
baby.

Refers to the fluid (or the sac that
contains it) that surrounds and protects
the fetus inside the mother's womb.

APHRODISIAC

A substance believed to increase sexual
desire and potency.  There are many
myths about foods, drinks, and drugs
that are thought to be aphrodisiacs.
The term comes from the Greek Goddess of
Love, Aphrodite.

AROUSE AROUSAL

Stimulated, excited.  A state of arousal
is accompanied by physiological changes
such as increased heart rate and blood
flow. Sexual organs, such as the penis
and nipple, get hard and swollen because
of this increase in blood flow.

ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION

A procedure by which a doctor injects a
male's sperm into a woman's uterus with
a fine tube. This allows many women who
are unable to get pregnant naturally to
carry and bear a child.

ASEXUAL

Without sexual desire or activity.  Also
non-sexual.

AUTOEROTICISM

BARTHOLIN'S GLANDS

Two glands found at both sides of the
vaginal entrance.  They are responsible
for producing a fluid which lubricates

A method of birth control that involves
monitoring (keeping track of) the basal
body temperature to determine periods of

A person who is married to more than one
person at the same time.  BIGAMY is
against the law in the United States and
many other nations.

BIRTH CONTROL

The planning or prevention of birth.
Also called family planning and
contraceptiobn.  Some common forms of
birth control are: abstinence, the
rhythm method, condoms, the pill, the
IUD, the diaphragm, and sterilization.

BISEXUAL

A person having sexual desires and
relations with persons of both sexes.

BREAST FEEDING
BREST FEED-ding
The providing of milk (for nourishment)
by the mother to the infant child by
allowing the child to suck on the
nipples of her breasts. Also called
nursing.

BREECH BIRTH

Childbirth in which the baby is
presented feet or buttocks first. This
can pose a minor problem in the
delivery.

BROTHEL

A house where people can rent sexual
partners for money.

CASTRATE CASTRATION

The removal of the male gonads
(testicles).  Castration results in
sterility as there is no longer any way
for the man to produce sperm.

A way of life in which an individual

A contraceptive device that closes off
the cervix.  This prevents the sperm
from reaching the Fallopian tubes.

The neck of the uterus. The end closest
to the vagina.

A method of childbirth in which the
child is surgically removed by cutting
the abdomen wall and removing the baby
from  the uterus.  Often called just a
C-Section.

CHANCRE

The name given to the sore or lesion
caused by syphillis.

CHANCROID
SHANG-kroid
An infection of the genitals, usually
venereal.  Painful lesions usually
develop and local lymph nodes become
swollen.

CHILD MOLESTER
CHILD mo-LESS-ter
A mentally ill person who gets pleasure
from touching, fondling, or having
sexual contact with children.  Child
molesting is cruel and illegal; it
should be reported to parents and
police.

CHROMOSOME
CROW-mo-some (rhyme with home)
A cell that provides the plan for the
body's development. One pair determines
the sex of the child (An XY-combination
produces a male, and two X-chromosomes
produce a female).  There are 23 pairs
of chromosomes all together.

CIRCUMSIZE CIRCUMCISION

A surgical procedure in which the
foreskin of the penis is removed.  This
operation usually takes place shortly
after birth.  The reasons for
circumcision are cultural, not medical.

Slang term for gonorrhea.

CLIMAX

A slang term for the intense feelings
known as an orgasm.  Often used
interchangeably with ejaculation.

CLITORIS
clit-OR-us
A small female sex organ located in the
vaginal canal just above the urinary
opening.  The clitoris has many nerve
endings and blood vessels making it very
sensitive.  It is important in
increasing sexual tension and arousal.

COIL
COIL
A type of IUD, so nicknamed because of
its shape. The term coil is often used
to refer to any IUD.  IUD stands for
intrauterine device -- a type of
contraceptive that is fitted in the
woman's uterus by a gynecologist.

COITUS
KO-ee-tus
Sexual intercourse. The joining of the
male and female sex organs.

COITUS INTERRUPTUS

Withdrawal of the penis (from the
vagina) just prior to ejaculation. This
is usually done to avoid pregnancy.
Unfortunately, it is a very unreliable
method of birth control.

COME CUM
COME
A slang term referring to semen.  The
verb COMING is often used as a synonym
for ejaculating or having an orgasm.

CONCUBINE

A woman who has sex and lives with a man
without being married to him.

CONCEIVE CONCEPTION

The uniting of sperm and egg.  The
beginning of the process of creating a
baby.

CONDOM

A rubber sheath worn over the penis
during intercourse to collect the semen
thus preventing pregnancy.  The condom
is also helpful in preventing the spread
of venereal diseases.

CONTRACEPTIVE

Something used to prevent pregnancy.
Also called a birth control device.
Commonly used contraceptives are:
condoms, diaphragms, IUDs, and the pill.

CONTRACTION

Muscle tightenings that occur in the
woman's vagina during (and just before)
the birthing process. It is these
contractions that will help the baby
move out the vagina.

COPULATE COPULATION

Sexual intercourse. The union of penis
and vagina.

CRABS

Slang term for pubic lice -- small
animals that live in the hair follicles,
usually in the pubic area.

CRAMPS
CRAMPS
Muscle contractions (tightenings). Often
used by women to refer to the
contractions they experience as part of
their monthly period.  For some women
this can be quite uncomfortable.

DEVIANT

A person with strange, socially
unacceptable interests and behaviors. A
child molester and a Peeping Tom are
examples of deviants.

DIAPHRAGM

A dome shaped rubber contraceptive
device placed in the woman's vagina to
prevent sperm cells from reaching the
Fallopian tubes.  It is a relatively
safe, but somewhat unreliable, method of
birth control.

DILDO

An artificial penis made of plastic,
rubber or wood, used for the purpose of
masturbation.

DISCHARGE

A secretion from the vagina or penis,
frequently indicative of an infection,
perhaps a venereal disease.

DOUBLE STANDARD

A belief held by many people in our
society that premarital and extramarital
sex is acceptable for a man but not for
a woman.

DOUCHE

To cleanse the vagina with a liquid.
This was once considered an important
aspect of feminine hygiene, but is now
considered unncessary.  Certain douches
(like Coke) are mistakenly used as a
method of birth control.

ECTOPIC PREGNANCY

An extrauterine pregnancy, one in which
the fertilized egg fails to move to the
uterus.  This is a dangerous condition
because only the uterus can expand to
accomodate the developing fetus.

The discharge of semen.  After
sufficient stimulation of the penis,
semen is carried through the
urethra and released abruptly.

EJACULATORY DUCT

Regulates the release of semen into the
urethra. It makes sure there is no urine
in the urethra, since urine can kill the
sperm in the semen.  The ejaculatory
duct is found in the prostate gland.

To castrate.  To remove the testicles.
To deprive of manliness in a more
general sense.

EMBRYO

The term for the developing baby inside
the mother's womb during the first
couple of months after conception.
After eight to twelve weeks it is called
a fetus.

The epididymis connects the
testes with the vas deferens.

ERECTION

The swelling, and stiffening of the
penis caused by the rush of blood to
this area.  Erections generally result
from sexual excitement.  The penis will
return to its normal soft state after
ejaculation or just the passing of time.

EROGENOUS ZONES

Certain sensitive parts of the body that
when touched or stimulated can cause
sexual excitement.  Common erogenous
zones are: the external genitals, the
breasts, and the lips.

matter.  Often used in reference to
books, magazines, or art.  Comes from

A castrated male. A male who has had his
testes removed.

A person (most often a male) who exposes
his genitals in public as a means of
sexual gratification. This is an example
of a deviant.

Adultery.  Sexual intercourse outside of

Slang term for a male homosexual.  In
some areas it is a general insult, used
without regard to sexual orientation.

These passages extend from each ovary to
the uterus.  They (there are two) play
an important role in the reproductive
process.

A term used to describe the motives,
goals, and actions taken to regulate the
creation of babies.  The timing of
pregnancies and use of contraceptives
(birth control) to achieve the desired
result.

The joining of the sperm and
egg.  The beginning of conception.

FETUS

An unborn baby.  The unborn baby is
called an embryo during the first two
months after conception.  After that, it
is called a fetus.

FLASHER

Slang term for an exhibitionist who
enjoys displaying his genitals in
public.  Flashers are frequently
depicted as men in raincoats (with
nothing underneath) who briefly "flash"
their private parts.  Flashers are an
example of deviants.

A sensuous kiss that includes tongue
contact.

Slang term for a male prostitute.

GLAND

An organ that makes a hormone.

GLANS

The tip of the penis.  The glans becomes
exposed from the foreskin during an
erection.  The  glans is a very
sensitive area because of a large
number of blood vessels and nerve
endings.

GONADS

Sex glands.  The male gonads are the
testes or testicles; the female gonads
are the ovaries.

GONOCOCCUS

The bacterium responsible for causing
gonorrhea.

GONORRHEA

A venereal disease (VD) caused by the
gonococcus.  This is a common and
dangerous sexually transmitted disease
(STD) that requires medical attention.

A physician who specializes in the
female reproductive system.

HETEROSEXUAL
HET-ter-oh-sex-you-al
A person whose sexual interests are
directed toward members of the opposite
sex.  This is the most common sexual
orientation, and considered by some to
be the only normal one.

HOMOSEXUAL
HO-mo-sex-you-al
A person whose sexual interests are
directed toward members of the same sex.
It is controversial as to whether this
is normal or not.  It appears that at
least 10% of the population may be
homosexual or bisexual.

HORMONES

Substances produced and released into
the bloodstream by glands.  They control
various body functions.  The hormones
produced by the testes (male) and
ovaries (female) control sexual
development.

HUSTLER
HUSS-ler
Slang term for a prostitute.  When
applied to a male prostitute, it usually
implies homosexuality.

HYGIENE
HIGH-jean
The science of health.  Also used to
describe cleanliness, particularly as
it applies to the body.  Personal
hygiene is very important to good
health.

HYMEN
HIGH-men
A membrane that partially covers and
guards the entrance to the vagina.
While an intact (unbroken) hymen is
indicative of a virgin, a broken hymen
does not necessarily mean that a female
has had sexual intercourse. Sporting
activities can break a hymen.

HYSTERECTOMY

The surgical removal of the uterus.
This operation is fairly common in
middle-aged women.  It is usually
performed to reduce the occurrence of
medical problems.  A woman is sterile
(unable to have babies) after this
operation.

IDENTICAL TWIN

Twins (two offspring) that come from the
same egg.  This occurs as a result of
the zygote's splitting very early in its
development.

ILLEGITIMATE CHILD

The offspring of an unmarried mother.  A
bastard.

IMPOTENCE
IM-poh-tense
The inability of the male to have an
erection.  This sexual disorder prevents
the male from being able to have
intercourse.  Most men experience
temporary impotence at some time.

INCEST

Sexual relations between close relatives
such as parent and child or brother and
sister.  In most societies, including
our own, incest is immoral and illegal.
Incest is a very sick act and should be
reported to parents, teachers, or the
police.

INFERTILE  INFERTILITY

Unable to have a baby.  Sterile.

INSEMINATION

The depositing of semen into the vagina.
This is done naturally through
intercourse, or artificially (by a
doctor) as a means of helping a woman to
become pregnant.

INTERCOURSE

The insertion of the penis into the
vagina.  In these lessons it is used
interchangably with sexual intercourse.
Also known as coitus.

INTRAUTERINE DEVICE  (IUD)

A small plastic device inserted by a
gynecologist into the uterus to prevent
pregnancy.  This is a fairly reliable
method of birth control, but there is a
possibility of medical complications.

The protective lips of the vulva.  Women
possess two layers of labia: Labia Major
(outer) and Labia Minor (inner).

LABOR

The process of giving birth.  Labor is
"work" for the mother (hence the term).
The vaginal contractions that help the
baby move down the vaginal canal are
often very painful to the mother.

LECHEROUS
LECH-er-us
A lustful person. Someone who desires an
extraordinary amount of sexual activity
or who frequently thinks about sexual
things.  There is a good possibility
that a lecher (a lecherous person) is
also deviant and dangerous.

LESBIAN
LES-be-ann
A female homosexual.

LUBRICANT
LOU-brick-ant
A substance that facilitates the
insertion of the penis into the vagina.
Sexual foreplay will usually stimulate
the woman to produce natural lubricants.
If these are inadequate, special jellies
are sold for this purpose.

MASTECTOMY

The surgical removal of a breast.  This
operation is usually performed to remove
a cancerous breast.  The operation is
not uncommon; thousands of women live
normal healthy lives after this
operation.

MASTURBATION

Self-stimulation.  The touching or
playing with one's own genitals that may
or may not lead to orgasm.  Masturbation
is considered normal and healthy if done
in private and not to excess.

growing up.  When one is grown up, one
is considered mature.  The term can

The term for the first menstruation.
This marks the beginning of puberty for
the female.  Menarche usually occurs
anywhere from age 9 to 16.

MENOPAUSE

The last menstrual flow.  Women are
usually somewhere around their late
40's when they have their last period.

MENSTRUAL CYCLE

The process of releasing and then
discharging an ovum.  Women experience
this cycle (unless they are pregnant or

every month from early in their teens

The periodic discharge of blood and
other tissue from the reproductive tract
of the mature female.  Also called the

A person trained in the delivery of a

An unplanned, spontaneous abortion.  For
some medical reason the fetus ceases to
live and is expelled.

To touch, fondle, or in any way force
physical contact on someone.  Generally,
molest refers to sexual contact imposed
by somebody on an innocent victim.  Very
often the victim is a child, who needs

A marriage (or relationship) of one man
and one woman.  This is the normal
relationship in our society.

The soft, fleshy, hair-covered mound in
the female pubic region.

Kissing, touching, and other gentle acts
that can lead to sexual contact.

NOCTURNAL EMISSION

An involuntary ejaculation that can
occur during sleep. A "wet dream," as it
is also called, is not uncommon in older
boys and teenagers, as it serves the
function of releasing the buildup of
sperm and seminal fluids.

NYMPHOMANIA  NYMPHOMANIAC

A condition in which a female has an
insatiable (overly strong) desire for
sexual activity.

OBSCENE

Any book, movie, picture, or act that
violates society's stand on sexual
propriety (decency).  Similar to rude,
lewd, "dirty," etc.  There are
frequently specific legal definitions
for the purpose of enforcing anti-
pornography laws.

OBSTETRICIAN
ob-ste-TRISH-an
A physican specializing in the care of
pregnant women and in the delivery of
babies.  Often obstetricians are also
gynecologysts and are called OB/GYN.

ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE
OR-al  con-tra-SEPP-tiv
Artificial hormones taken to prevent
pregnancy.  These pills, taken daily,
act to prevent ovulation.  Commonly
called BIRTH CONTROL PILLS or just THE
PILL.

ORGASM

A series of muscular contractions that
occurs at the peak of sexual
stimulation.  In males this generally
results in ejaculation. In females
it relieves congestion (tension) in
the pelvic area.

OVA  OVUM
OH-va  OH-vum
The female egg.  Normally, one ovum is
released each month.  Fraternal twins
result from the fertilization of two
ova.

OVARY
OH-va-ree
The female reproductive gland, it is
responsible for releasing ova and
producing estrogen and progesterone
(female sex hormones). A woman normally
has two ovaries.

PEEPING TOM

Slang term for a voyeur -- someone who
obtains pleasure from watching other
people undress or engage in sexual
activity.  A voyeur is an example of a
deviant.

PENIS

The male sex organ that hangs down from
the crotch in front of the scrotal sac.
The penis is used for urination and
copulation (intercourse).

PERIOD

Common term for menstruation.  This
28-day cycle serves to cleanse the
mature woman's reproductive system.
It is evidenced by a vaginal discharge
of blood and discarded tissue.

PERVERT  PERVERSE
PER-vert   per-VERSE
A sexual deviant.  Someone who departs
from accepted standards of sexual
activity. Some perverts are dangerous,
if they impose their peculiarities on
others.  Children can learn how to avoid

Sexual contact that includes kissing,
holding, and touching someone that you
care about. Similar to necking.

wall of the uterus.  It provides

Many women experience a mood change each
month just before their period. This is
a result of the hormones being released
during this period. Many women find this
to be an uncomfortable time.

Books, magazines, art, movies, etc. that
are for the purpose of sexually arousing
the viewer.  There are many laws
regulating pornography that vary from
place to place.

The gland located at the beginning of
the male urethra. It is responsible for
producing male hormones.  As men get
older, it can swell up, causing pain,
and require an operation.

A person that exchanges sexual activity
for payment (usually money).
Prostitution has existed for as long as
history is recorded, yet it is illegal
in most places.

The period (roughly the teenage years)
in which the body develops rapidly from

The act of forcing another person to
have sexual intercourse.  Rape is a
violent act that is not in any way
pleasurable to the victim, who often

RHYTHM METHOD

A method of contraception in which the
partners attempt to determine when the

intercourse only during "safe" periods.
This is not a particularly reliable
method of birth control.

RUBBER

Slang term for a condom. A rubber sheath

named because they are often made of

An absorbent pad used by women during

The sack that hangs down between the
legs of a male, directly behind the
penis.   The scotum has the ability to
contract  up into the body (for example
when it is cold) to help protect the
testicles.

SEMEN
SEE-men
A thick white fluid released by the
penis during ejaculation.  Semen
contains sperm cells as well as
nutrients  (food) for the sperm.

SEMINAL EMISSION
SEM-in-nell ee-MISS-shun
Ejaculation.  The release of semen by
the penis as a result of sexual
stimulation.

SEMINAL VESICLES
SEM-in-nell VESS-ick-kells
Glands that connect with the ejaculatory
duct and secrete nutrients for the sperm
cells.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES (STD)

A number of infectious diseases that are
frequently, but not always, a result of
sexual contact with an infected person.
Also call Venereal Diseases (VD).

SMEGMA
SMEGG-ma
A buildup of secretions (fluids) which
collect under the foreskin of the penis,
or the hood of the clitoris, that must
be cleaned away to avoid infection.

The small male sex cell that is
responsible for fertilizing the female
egg.  Mature men continually produce
huge quantities of sperm in the testes.

SPERMICIDE

A chemical substance that kills sperm
cells. Spermicidal jellies and creams
are frequently used in combination with
other contraceptive measures.

SPONTANEOUS ABORTION

A miscarriage. The unplanned termination
of a pregnancy.

The inability to have children. This
condition can happen for a variety of
natural reasons or as a result of

SYPHILIS

A venereal disease caused by the
spirochetes bacteria. Syphilis is an
extremely dangerous disease, which if
allowed to go untreated can lead to
blindness and death.

TAMPON
TAM-pon
An absorbent tube-shaped piece of
material that is inserted into the
vagina to absorb the menstrual flow.

TESTES  TESTICLES
TES-tees  TES-tih-kills
The male gonads.  The two ball-shaped
organs contained in the scrotum that are
responsible for producing male hormones
and sperm cells.

TESTOSTERONE
tes-TOS-ter-own
The male sex hormone produced by the
testes.  Testesterone is important in
the development of many masculine sex
characteristics (for example: deepening
voice, facial and body hair, etc.).

TUBAL PREGNANCY
TOO-bull PREG-nan-see
The condition in which the fertilized
egg stays in the Fallopian tube instead
of the uterus.  This is a dangerous
condition since there is not enough room
for it to grow.  Also called an ectopic
pregnancy.

TUBAL LIGATION
TOO-bull lie-GAY-shun
The operation in which the woman's
Fallopian tubes are cut and/or clamped
to prevent the fertilization of the ova.
This contraceptive operation results in
sterility. It is frequently
irreversible.

UMBILICAL CORD
um-BILL-ick-cal  KORD
The tube-like connection between the
mother and the fetus. It provides
nourishment (food) to the unborn baby.
At the time of birth it is tied and cut.

URETHRA
you-REE-thra
The narrow canal that transports urine
from the bladder to the outside of the
body. In the male it also carries semen.

URINE
YOUR-in
The liquid waste product.  In the male,
urine is transported through the urethra
and out the small opening at the end of
the penis. In the female, there is a
small urethral opening above the vagina.

UTERUS
YOU-tur-us
The "home" of the developing fetus. Also
known as the WOMB, it is designed to
expand as the fetus grows, and to allow
food eaten by the mother to nourish the
unborn baby.

VAGINA
va-JIE-na
The female birth canal, it extends from
the uterus to the outside.  During
sexual intercourse, it accomodates the
erect penis, providing access to the
Fallopian tubes for the male sperm
cells.

VAS DEFERENS
VAS DE-fer-enz
The passageway taken by the sperm as
they go from the epididymis to the
ejaculatory duct.

VASECTOMY
vah-SECT-toe-me
The male sterilization operation. It
involves cutting the vas deferens,
preventing the sperm cells from joining
the semenal fluid. For this reason, it
is still possible for these men to have
erections and to ejaculate normally.

VENEREAL DISEASE  (VD)
ven-EAR-ee-al
Refers to a number of diseases in  which
sexual activity is the usual form of
communication.  Also known as STD.
